Holiday Checklist

Holidays can be great fun but before you go on holiday this holiday checklist will help you get the most out of your holiday.

Planning for your holiday

Check with your GP, well in advance of your holiday date, to find out whether you need any vaccinations for the country you’re visiting
For the latest information about the country you're visiting, including safety and visa requirements, you can check the Foreign & Commonwealth Office website.
Check the expiry date on your passport and the passports of everyone travelling with you - some countries will require your passport to remain valid for a minimum period (usually at least 6 months). Don't turn up to the airport with an expired passport and ensure that your passport is in good condition
Check whether you need to reconfirm your flights or hotel bookings. This may not be required but it may be safer to check

If you are making your own way to the airport or ferry terminal, rather than using publich transport, plan your route! Check for any road works.
If you are travelling by public transport, check for engineering works

Do some research about the area you’re going on holiday to - try and find recommended restaurants or places of interest so that you can make the most of your time on holiday
Obtain an E111 form from the post office if you are travelling to Europe

Preparing for your holiday

Leave your holiday details, including photocopies of your passport and flight tickets, contact numbers and travel insurance details, with a friend, family member or neighbour. Leave a spare key with someone you trust so that they have access to your property in an emergency.
Use a timer so lights come on at night. If possible set various lights to come on at random intervals to give the illusion that someone is home.
Pack your travel insurance policy details so that you can refer to them if neccesary. If you are taking your mobile phone on holiday with you it may be a good idea to store the telephone number of your travel insurance company
Cancel milk and paper deliveries. The last thing you want is milk on the doorstep and newspapers sticking out of the letterbox
Clear your fridge and kitchen of anything that might go off during the time you are away. Put out the bins unless after emptying them the refuse collection people leave it on the edge of the path as this could show that you are away.
Ask someone to water your garden plants and house plants. Double check bookings with the dog kennel or cattery.
Make sure that all the house and shed windows and doors are close (and locked if locks are fitted)
Unplug electrical appliances (except fridges and freezers unless you have defrosted them in advance)
Check your home insurance is in order and valid
Prepare a first aid kit to take with you
If you are going away during the winter months, leave the heating and hot water on a low setting to stop pipes freezing
Ask the post office if they can to hold your post at the sorting office if you are going away for a long time

Packing for your holiday

When packing for your holiday, here are some things that you might not want to forget!

Mobile phone charger if you are taking your mobile phone, and an adapter plug if your are taking electrical items
A padlock and two sets of keys to lock your luggage
An eye mask and ear plugs if you want to sleep on the plane
Your camera, spare film and spare batteries
Plenty of sun cream and lip protector
Your sunglasses and sun hat
